Jenn here,
Hey, hey - it’s Tuesday! I hope you’re doing well. Here’s today’s news roundup.
Missouri House Republicans vote to defund public libraries. “The version that will now head to the State Senate eliminated "not only the $4.5 million Parson had slated for libraries, but also costs for diversity initiatives, childcare, and pre-kindergarten programs.” More here
TYT’s Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur have attacked leftists online today, including former TYT employee Emma Vigeland, doubling down on what many consider to be harmful TERF language and behavior. Yesterday’s story has more details on this if you need to catch up.
Today, Ana and Cenk stated on the TYT Live main show that they no longer want to collaborate with leftists. VIDEO CLIP WITH CAPTIONS HERE
Transcript: (Ana) "I'm going to be honest - I just don't really care to like collaborate with any other leftist ever again at this point. (Cenk) "Yeah, no " (Ana) "No, that's where I'm at because they come on the show, they build a name for themselves, and then they build a bigger name for themselves, trashing us as if they don't know who we are, as if they haven't worked with us, they don't know what our actual political values are." "So, I just...Cenk, I never want to talk about them again; I never want to address them again; it's a waste of time. There's important stuff going on in the country. Our personal drama with a bunch of leftists on Twitter doesn't matter." (Cenk) "All right."
Ana’s tweets and now Cenk’s piling on and doubling/quadrupling down have gotten a LOT of attention, gaining praise from the far-right and ire from the left, including many leftists they’ve worked with in the past who have their own platforms (name your fav leftist, and they were probably caught in the wake). People *supporting* Ana Kasparian’s TERF Tweets (of which there are multiple) include Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro, Robby Starbuck, Candace Owens, Ian Miles Cheong, LibsOfTikTok Chaya, and Stephen Miller (redsteeze). Is this who they want to be aligned with? It’s hurtful to so many.
Daunte Wright was a Black man and father who was murdered by cop Kim Potter. Potter has been given just a 24-month sentence for Wright’s murder.
As reported by Unicorn Riot, Daunte Wright’s mother, Kim, responded to this news by saying, “Kim Potter murdered my son … today, the justice system murdered him again.” WATCH Unicorn Riot’s reporting, HERE
Home Depot Workers United (the worker’s group, not the company itself) has come out with a statement to support #StopCopCity in Atlanta.
The statement: “As police violence sadly is once again in the national spotlight, it’s worth highlighting Home Depot is a key corporate supporter and backer of what is commonly referred to as ‘Cop City’ in Atlanta. Not even 3 years ago, then CEO, Craig Manear, issued a statement in the wake of the murders of George Floyd & Ahmad Aubrey lamenting the harsh patterns of racism & discrimination in our country. At the time Manear also announced a donation of $1 million to the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in the name of “actionable change” and “building a more inclusive society.” Home Depot sits on the board of trustees of a massive police training facility commonly referred to as ‘Cop City’. In the face of widespread community opposition, the Cop City project was announced in 2021 by then Atlanta Mayor Bottoms. Bottoms is sister to current Home Depot CDO, Derek Bottoms. It’s unclear what portion of the projects $80m budget is being provided by Home Depot but even $1 is too much.”
The Rutgers Strike is on day two - here is a link for updates straight from the Rutgers AAUP-AFT Academic Worker Union.
Rutgers University President Holloway threatening to block the #RutgersStrike and “take legal action.” Gov. Phil Murphy intervened to delay any legal action. “In a union update Monday evening from Trenton, Rutgers AAUP-AFT President Rebecca Givan said the union did not receive or exchange any offers.” More information here
More Perfect Union reports: “The members of Trinity Moravian Church in North Carolina purchased nearly $3.3 million of local residents’ medical debt for just $15,048. Then, they held a debt jubilee ceremony and burned up the debt, canceling it all.” VIDEO HERE (more of this, please!!)
Axios’ Lucille Sherman reports: “2 governors lost friends in mass shootings amid U.S. gun violence rise.” So, does this mean we can take action now? Any action at all? Link here
Members of “The Squad” in Congress have come forward to stand up for Julian Assange. Rep. Rashida Tlaib tweeted: “Four years ago today, Julian Assange was arrested for publishing the truth. I’m leading a letter to Attorney General Garland urging him to uphold the freedom of the press by dropping these Trump-era charges and withdrawing the extradition request.” Link here
The letter was signed by Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, Greg Casar, Jamaal Bowman, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
