SO infuriating. I was browsing Reddit the other day as I often do before bed because I’m a masochist and came across this clip. It is *ghoulish* in the strongest sense of the word. From 2014, it is astonishing even now just how evil Kevin O’Leary is in this CBC exchange with Amanda Lang. 2014’s economics for the poor seem quaint and calm (by that I mean horrifying, terrifying, and sad) in comparison to what is happening now, and … just look, you have to see it for yourself:
If you can’t stomach watching, Lang quotes an Oxfam report which showed that 85 of the world’s richest people had as much wealth as the 3.5 billion poorest people.
Kevin O’Leary’s (aka Shark Tank’s Mr. Wonderful) response? He believes it’s fantastic and inspirational. He loves it! Bravo!
When an astonished Lang points out that someone earning $1 a day somewhere can’t exactly pull themselves up by the socks when they don’t even have socks. This does not deter O’Leary, who is an absolute ghoul.
I’m sorry I don’t have better news for you this labor day (though I will follow up with some very, very inspirational stories from the labor movement in the coming days!), but I think it’s helpful to know how things have gone since 2014. It’s, as you’re well aware, much worse.
Oxfam shows:
Just 8 men own the same wealth as half the world (2017)
Mega-rich recoup COVID-losses in record-time yet billions will live in poverty for at least a decade (2021)
Pandemic creates new billionaire every 30 hours — now a million people could fall into extreme poverty at same rate in 2022 (2022)
Maybe it’s a good idea to tell Mr. Wonderful and all of his little friends just how shitty they are - and major kudos to all in the labor movement who are revolting right now.
